BFD sent this to me with the simple note “can we get a Nissan Leaf*,” and within seconds I was tearing up.

I’m hoping my 2000 civic lasts another ten years, but when the time comes I’ll definitely be looking into the Nissan Leaf and seeing if it’s legit.

Check out the video; there’s some faint music, but my tears and sniffs were more of a problem for workplace viewing.

*BFD then added, “personally, I thought the ad might have ended better if the polar bear ended up mauling and eating the suburban guy who DIDN’T buy the Nissan Leaf.” As well he might have.

this (past) weekend

Yeah, it’s already Friday, but I’m gonna do a weekend post anyway.

This past weekend was awesome. Way better than this week. In fact, I’m going to just zone out for the rest of the day, thinking of last weekend and this one to come.

We went to a dahlia garden. Clearly.

I am in love with dahlias (also, clearly). I could just gaze at them all day, with all their funky shapes and absurd sizes and Dr. Seussian colors. There’s a dahlia in BFD’s back yard that is over 6 inches across, I kid you not. And it’s bright purple.

This isn’t it, but this one is also lovely. As soon as I get settled in my new home, I’m going to plant a dahlia garden like you wouldn’t believe.  And I’m gonna start with these wavey, crinkley ones. They might be my favorite.

We also saw this macaw:

Of which I will see plenty of in the jungle*.

And some gross creepy crawlies I am told we will see plenty of as well:

About which I’m far less excited.

*Which will be in just 50 short days! Ooowee!

photos by me, via iPhone4. I haven’t yet figured out all the gizmos of my new camera — in fact, she’s still a little bit intimidating — but I’m working on it!

BFD and I have a running dialogue* about what counts as art, specifically art we can buy for our apt. We have committed ourselves to buying art from local artists rather than cheesy wall art from target, apparently**.

Typically our conversations go:
me – Does this count as art? Because I love it! Look, there’s a fancy lady with a jaguar and a martini glass (or something) and it’s all vintagey!
BFD – Umm… no.

BUT these have got to count! I mean, they’re locally done***, prints from handmade letterpress. And the colors are amazing, and they’re of food, my favorite subject! I love them!

I think, the tomato’s my favorite.

Letterpress prints by Yeehaw.

*except that to him it problem seems like a one-way stream of annoyance, rather than dialogue.
**This does not extend to cheesy wall art from target that has already been purchased and hung and loved well before moving in together — or I’m not coming.
*** If you happen to live in Knoxville.

Dear J Crew,

Ummm…. J Crew, I already have a J Crew card; don’t you remember? You should know this about me as I pay you many $$$ through it.

J Crew dear, this is the second email in as many days that has been both lame and dumb. Clogging up my inbox with “deals” that are not available to me is a bad user experience. But maybe this is just my quirky preference. Maybe most other J Crew shoppers enjoy reading about deals future card holders can reap. maybe they think it one of your lovable indiosyncracies (like your chicly disheveled frills or the way you put sequins on everything last year) that you email them an exclusive offer that is simultaneously available to everyone*.

As someone who works in email marketing, I’m calling you out. Step it up, J Crew, or we might get on bad terms.

Many thanks,

*Saracasm leads me to excessive italics usage. Apologies.

I am learning that you don’t get very far in the world be keeping quiet and trying to be nice. In fact, sometimes you get a quite craptastic feeling by keeping quiet and trying to be nice.

From now on, I’m resolving to be LOUD while trying to be nice.*

*Keeping my fingers crossed about this.
